Chapter 10 - Don’t Make Him Chose Between You, Family & Friends

He had a life before he met you which was somewhat fulfilling. Why do you expect him to give up what is important to him because you are now an item? This sort of has something to do with jealousy but not really. It is more of a control issue. Now that you are together is he to forsake his former life for his new life? That is totally unnecessary and, in my opinion, you shouldn’t ask him to do it.

That doesn’t mean that he goes to topless bars with his buddies to get drunk every other weekend. Or, pickup bars where you see the same women week after week looking for love. I was in a relationship where the guy would go to pickup bars when I was out of town. I wasn’t in the relationship long, though. I don’t want to worry about behavior that is totally inappropriate. However, if he wants to get together and play golf with his buddies don’t try to get in-between them.

It is healthy for you and your mate to seek outside friendships. Not with the opposite sex but with good friends. You are not looking for a clone of yourself to be in a relationship with. You are seeking someone who has a life outside of yours that can contribute something to your union. Don’t let your jealousy and insecurity get in the way of your happiness with your man.

You want him to have a great relationship with his family. Whether it is an ex-wife with children, his mom, dad and siblings… it is important for him to maintain a healthy relationship with them. I have a friend who is so possessive that her husband cannot even mention his ex-wife without her going ballistic. The ex-wife has the children 50% of the time so why not try to have a good relationship with her? Even if she is a raving maniac and crazy you don’t have to be best friends….just be civil. I feel sorry for the children who have to deal with parents who despise each other. Add to that the jealousy of the new wife and it can be a living hell.

I met a woman who forced her husband to give up custody of his son because of her extreme jealousy. She made him choose between an innocent child and marriage to her. Another woman I know has mistreated her stepdaughter because she is so jealous that her husband had a relationship with the poor girl’s mother. You would be surprised at how many women are jealous of their mate’s ex, his family, friends or children. You cannot have too much love and compassion in your heart. In fact, it is physically impossible for a heart to explode from love. So, rather than express your jealousy and insecurity why don’t you open your heart up to the people in your mate’s life?

Be happy that your man can have and maintain relationships that are long lasting.
